Understand your share link and who can open it
What the share URL means, public vs password access, and what visitors see.
Who it's for
- Hosts sharing a page with teammates, clients, or friends
- Anyone unsure why visitors see a password form or a blank page
- Users comparing public and password-protected hosting
Steps
- Get the link — After you host your first page, copy the share URL from the success state or from History.
- Public pages — With password protection off, anyone with the link can open the page—no HTMLPUT account required.
- Password pages — With protection on, visitors enter the password you set before the HTML loads.
- Link shape — The URL points at HTMLPUT's edge; your
file_keyidentifies the hosted page (see the snippet below). - Test as a visitor — Open the link in a private window to confirm public vs password behavior.

Gotchas
- Changing access in Edit affects new visitors immediately; keep the password you shared in sync.
- Do not embed secret tokens in the URL path—use password protection instead.
- Deleted or banned pages stop loading even if someone kept an old link.
